The program enables the child to enjoy writing. They learn the skills of effective planning, seeing how the process works without having to commit themselves to paper. It is so easy for them to build from pictures to writing, being able to move sections around and see how a story can be structured. Other elements of the program are very useful for reinforcement of sequencing skills, sorting and thinking.
It provides a structure through which pupils' understanding can be established before a unit of work, e.g. on a science concept. This enables more effective planning. It is a key tool for assessment for learning. Plus, the ease with which the concept maps can be drawn and revised means that all pupils can succeed in creating a meaningful and well organised concept map - in a way that is impossible on paper without redrawing.
Kidspiration is a valuable tool to assist primary aged children to organise their ideas visually, using text, graphics and sound. It is a truly cross-curricular package that provides pupils with the opportunity to structure their ideas, whether they are creating stories or demonstrating their understanding of a scientific concept. The facility to edit a concept map as it is being developed allows pupils a degree of flexibility, that is not as easily available to them with pencil and paper.
